The Wand Unipivot Tonearm® Frequently Asked Questions The Wand Data sheet Download (PDF 110kB) Will The Wand fit on my turntable? See the data sheet above. The Wand is designed around the Rega style mounting dimensions. Do check the height, some lids may hit. Tell me about the mounts you have for my existing turntable / tonearm? The Wand comes with a mounting plate that can be used with most turntables. But to ease the replacement an existing arm we offer the following accessories; Download PDF of these (468kB)
Will The Wand work on my suspended turntable? The Wand weighs ~500g (~1lb) this is similar to SME 3009 and a little heavier than Rega arms (420g). So it should be within the adjustment range of most turntables. Is effective mass of The Wand ok with my cartridge? The Wand is "Medium Mass" at 12.5g effective mass, so will work with most cartridges. Even a high compliance cartridge like a Shure V15Vx gives a measured resonance at 7Hz, so is ok. At the other extreme, conventional low compliance cartridges work well. Arm/Cartridge matching is frequently over-stated, unless you have a system with massive bandwidth and insist on playing badly warped records it shouldn't be an issue.Tell me about buying The Wand? See Shopping FAQ page about buying from design build listen. We take orders by Fax and mail as well as Credit Card via secure Internet site. At the moment The Wand is not available via retailers, we are working on a different model variation for that. How does a tonearm affect sound off vinyl records? A record groove is less than 0.1mm wide. The music signal are ripples pressed into the walls of the groove, they are measured in millionth of a millimetre. To pick up these vibrations correctly, the arm holding the cartridge must not move relative to the groove, even microscopically. Yet at the same time the arm must move with perfect freedom across the record and over warps in the record. Cartridges effectively pick up the random collection of resonances and decayed vibrations that occur in most arms. This obscures the music with a layer of grunge (white noise). In The Wand, the radical big diameter armtube (with integrated cartridge mounting) is massively stiffer than most tonearms allowing more music and less grunge from your system. The Wand tonearm, Musical magic! What about tonearm geometry? Much of the internet is devoted to the effects of the geometry in tonearm design. The Wand uses a fairly conventional Baerwald alignment but with a fixed angle so can't be adjusted (so don't ask!).Registered Design / Patent The Wand Unipivot Tonearm is a Registered Design (NZ; 414494), US Pat.
